Instant Messenger lets me group my contacts by co-workers, family and friends, etc. I'd love to be able to set up categories. I hate it when I want to connect with someone and get excited because I am only 2 degrees away. Then I realize that the person who connects us is someone with more than 500 connections, usually a recruiter, and I realize the person who connects me to the individual probably knows him or her no better than I do. I am also part of the OpenLink network, but I'm sure I don't get as many requests as a recruiter does. I still try to take the time to check the profile and other info of the people who send me a request. I will even ask them how they think I might be able to help. As LinkedIn gains acceptance beyond sales, marketing, and people in IT (alll relevant to me) I suspect there will come a time when I start ignoring invitations without substance the same way I do on Twitter today.
